Uisce Éireann have been handed a tiny fine for killing nearly a thousand fish in Clare lake in April last year. The case was brought before the court by the IFI. This will just be a few Euro on the balance sheet and has no real meaning to anyone in power. The Clare Lake drains in the river Robe, so you can bet this pollution found its way into the river and caused more deaths. Nobody lost their job over this, nobody has been held responsible, nobody in the state bodies gives a shit. I despair!

That’s really bad news but unfortunately game fish are held in a disproportionately higher regard out here in the West. Clare lake is an excellent facility for anglers young and old and being within a major town makes angling all the more accessible to people whatever their personal circumstances, but particularly to those who are disabled. It’s not just a fish kill here but think of all the aquatic insects and other invertebrates which make up the whole ecosystem. Anyway mother nature has the knack to put things right and will no doubt wave her magic wand and bring about a speedy recovery!

Hi Andrew, You are dead right, here in Mayo if it is not a game fish then it has no value. It seems to me that the fines are little more than an irritation for Irish Water and I have no faith it will prevent them doing the same, or worse, in the future.
I personally have not fished Clare Lake but as you say, it was a wonderful amenity for the local community. Let’s hope it makes a good recovery.

Just pathetic. Two government agencies

So money transfers from one government agency to another, essentially meaning there is no fine. The whole thing is a scam.
