A nice simple one for you fly tyers out there, but one which does well on all Irish loughs.

Hook: I use a wide range of hooks for this pattern. Tie it on your bog standard heavy wet fly in sizes 8 to 12 or long shanks in the same range

Tying silk: I prefer 8/0 claret, but black works just as well

Tails: cock pheasant tail fibres or moose mane hair

Rib: oval gold tinsel

Body: claret seal’s fur. Thicken the fur towards the eye to give the body a nice tapered look

Hackles: I like a claret hen hackle under the silver mallard but this is at odds with most tyers who use a claret cock hackle insead.

And that is it! Very simple and yet very effective. I like it on the tail of a well sunk cast and find it effective from first knockings right through to the mayfly. I have done well on Cullin in particular with this fly.
